Batteries in Cold Weather

Submitted by Anonymous.

"Alkaline batteries are horrible in cold weather."

Some words from the tipster:

Alkaline batteries are naff in cold weather. The chemistry they use slows down a lot, and headtorches etc will become much dimmer and not last as long.

Rechargeable NiMHs are better, and continue to work effectively, well into sub-freezing temperatures.

Lithium batteries are even better still. They work in really cold temperatures. Some manufacturers claim -40°C. It's just a pity they are so expensive.

Has that actually resulted in a spark of interest? Really? Well, why not discuss further?

A small solar charger helps keeping batteries up to peak. I have found one very useful.

Keep alkaline batteries warm in your inner pockets, close to your body. You can then whip them out whenever you need them.
