The Half-Baked PrusikTM
The souped-up Mini Maglite can now be hung up quickly and easily, and more importantly, can be made to point in just about any direction.

To do this, we recommend the services of the Half-Baked PrusikTM. This is almost an original Prusik, except (1) it is tied with single cord rather than a loop of cord, and (2) we can't be bothered to finish it off properly.

The arrangement we are heading towards will look like this:

A Half-Baked Prusik in Use
A Half-Baked Prusik in use

The loop of cord on the left of the photograph is hooked over a tree branch, a loop on a tent ceiling, or whatever else is available. Note we have rotated the picture 90 degrees with respect to gravity. Misunderstanding gravity can be deadly when negotiating the great outdoors, so we have been careful to label it here.

To hang the souped-up torch in this way, first throw the end of the cord around the hanging point, e.g. a tree branch, then use the free end to tie the Half-Baked Prusik around the standing part as follows...

Make two turns:

Tying a Half-Baked Prusik
Tying a Half-Baked Prusik

Take the free end over the secondary standing part, or whatever it's called:

Tying a Half-Baked Prusik
Tying a Half-Baked Prusik

Then make another turn around the main standing part, trapping the free end as follows:

Tying a Half-Baked Prusik

It's easy to go wrong with the previous stage, so study the photo carefully. If you carefully aim for symmetry around the dotted line, then you'll probably get it right. If not, you could easily end up with a "Tautline Hitch". A Tautline Hitch would work fine, but we think a Half-Baked PrusikTM is neater.

You could even make one more final turn than in the last photo, and you will then have a full-blown Prusik, making you the envy of any passing climbers. We've stopped short, because one turn is fine for the purpose in mind, and it saves about 2 seconds - a vital 2 seconds that could be put to good use either brewing or consuming tea.

Finally, carefully tighten the knot up, keeping it neat, so that it looks as follows:

A Half-Baked Prusik
A Half-Baked Prusik

We now have an arrangement that enables us to perform gymnastics with the thing that we are hanging.
