The Leatherman Blast: Wire Stripper

The wire stripper is located on the same tool as the bottle opener. It is the v-shaped nick shown here:

The wire stripper is the v-shaped nick

It is, presumably, designed for stripping the plastic insulation off electrical wire. If there is a nice technique for using the tool to do that, then it is not described in the instructions that came with the Blast.

By finding an edge somewhere, e.g. the edge of a table, placing the wire on it, then placing the wire stripper onto the wire and scraping, sometimes it works. More often than not, though, either the wire is cut in two (the blade(s) of the wire stripper are very sharp), or the plastic does not come off neatly, as follows:

It has to be said that we did try it on rather thin wire, though. The wire in the photo is about 1mm thick, including the plastic sheath.

What seems to work much more reliably is to use the wire cutters instead. If you take a bit of care and get the pressure right...

...it is quite possible to reliably and neatly strip wire:

It gets good results

So there you have it. The Leatherman Blast is an effective tool for stripping electrical wire. Particularly if you don't use the wire stripper. Hopefully somebody will write in and tell us how to use it properly.
